Ericsson and Kodiak introduce 4G-compatible cloud-based push-to-talk (PTT) service in Europe

Following the successful launch of their cloud-based push-to-talk (PTT) service in the US last year, provider of integrated enterprise productivity applications for mobile operators, Kodiak Networks, and Ericsson have announced a 4G-compatible PTT service for Europe.

Together, Kodiak Networks and Ericsson have built a PTT platform that mobile network operators and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) can use to offer PTT services to their enterprise and corporate customers.

This is a next generation, instant calling solution with advanced features, centralised online address book management, and security, all delivered over 4G LTE, 3G WCDMA/HSPA and Wi-Fi networks.

With PTT, users can carry a single device to conveniently access instant voice service, broadband data, worker protection, workforce management and mobile productivity applications.

Because this is a cloud service, operators will always be able to offer their customers the latest version of the PTT service without the need for costly network infrastructure modifications. This means that PTT is a futureproof solution that can be continually managed and updated in the cloud.

In particular, organisations with mobile workforces in sectors such as construction, hospitality, security, oil and gas, utilities, manufacturing, field services, education and transportation, can benefit from the speed, cost effectiveness and convenience of this PTT service.

Bruce Lawler, co-founder and chief marketing officer, Kodiak Networks, said: 'With our service, users can communicate with a large audience at the touch of a button using whichever networks are available, including 4G LTE, 3G WCDMA/HSPA and Wi-Fi networks. Ericsson is the right partner to help us bring the enhanced features and benefits of PTT to Europe.'

Luigi Migliaccio, global head of IT managed services at Ericsson, said: 'This service has proved popular with operators and their customers in the US, and we are sure it will enjoy the same success in Europe. It's the only carrier-grade PTT service that supports 4G networks, such a wide range of handsets and even PCs – all while offering great voice quality. Because it is based on a cloud service model, leveraging Ericsson's data centres and managed services capabilities, it is easy to adopt this PTT service and immediately offer it to enterprises.'

The latest version of the joint PTT service offers features such as voice and signalling encryption, real time presence, talker priority, a web-based Corporate HeatherMcLeanistration Tool (CAT), integrated Dispatch console and the ability to augment or replace Private Mobile Radio (PMR).

Ericsson hosts the technology platform provided by Kodiak Networks in Ericsson's European data centre and operates it 24×7 via the Global Service Centre in Romania.
