Former CEO of Everything Everywhere and CEO and founder at Virgin Mobile returns to mobile industry
Tom Alexander, who led Everything Everywhere for the first year of its formation and who founded and ran Virgin Mobile, has returned to the mobile industry. Alexander has joined Viacloud UK Holdings as non executive chairman.
Previously, Alexander was chief executive at Everything Everywhere, which he remained head of for one year before stepping down in July 2011, to have his position filled by Olaf Swantee. Alexander worked at Orange prior to its merger with T-Mobile since 2008. He is most well known for founding Virgin Mobile in 1999, which he was also CEO of until 2006.
Alexander will provide Viacloud, a telecom infrastructure company developing mobile businesses through its mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) and mobile virtual network aggregator (MVNA) services, with his unique leadership experience in the mobile industry. Viacloud intends to continues its commercial expansion based upon its scalable mobile infrastructure for MVNOs and major brands.
He stated: 'I've been particularly interested in Viacloud as the company is now very well placed to help enable new MVNOs to address the mobile market. MVNOs have been extremely important in developing the consumer market over the past few years and this will continue through to the next phase, especially in the growth of mobile data and 4G. Consumer brands, content players and segmented routes to market are all key.
'I have been particularly impressed by Viacloud's backers' commitment to investment in quality of technical infrastructure and capability. They have brought together a strong, experienced team,' Alexander concluded.
Alexander's appointment closely follows the recruitment of the new executive team, which includes Emanuele Angelidis (CEO) and key senior management including Tim Stone (CCO), Jon Kandiah (CTO), and Richard Schaefer (CFO).
Ahmed Alumran, a managing partner at Stratum, the private equity firm behind Viacloud commented: 'We are delighted that Tom has chosen to join Viacloud as non executive chairman. It is a tremendous endorsement of our business, and he will now be instrumental – along with the executive management team – in fully realising the commercial potential that exists for Viacloud.'
Building upon its strategic partnership with EE and its fully integrated IP infrastructure, Viacloud has invested in 3G and 4G end to end technology with an out-of-the-box capacity to manage up to seven million subscribers.
